Flashback: Monday, 9 April, Last day of the long Holy Week break.
Feeling fat after doing nothing but eat, sleep and watch TV during the break, I decided to go to the gym before meeting my friend at 2 PM. As usual, I was running late so I took a cab from the Fort to Dela Costa Street.
2.10 PM
+639275907921: Chong, Trafalgar Building right? Anong nga floor uli yun? I'm on my way na. +639XXXXXXXXX: Yes, 26th Floor. Dito lang ako chong, c u! =)
2.20 PM
I remember alighting from the cab, entering the building, pressing the desired floor number on the monitor outside the elevator doors and waiting for the elevator that will take me upstairs. I remember becoming impatient and starting to pace up and down the hall. I remember finally entering the elevator, and panicking a bit because the elevator did not have any buttons inside, praying that I pressed the right floor. I remember smoothing my hair down, straightening my blouse, and fumbling around the pocket of my bag absent-mindedly, not really know what I was looking for. I remember my breath getting caught in my throat, and in two painfully long seconds, it just hit me - - - MY FRIGGIN' PHONE! I suddenly remembered sitting back in the taxi, eating my sandwich, and texting my friend. I remembered putting my phone on 'General Mode' so I can hear if my friend replies already. I remembered reading her response, and still eating my sandwich, placing the phone on the seat of the taxi. I remembered paying the driver, zipping my bag pocket, and going up the building steps. I didn't remember putting the phone back in my friggin bag.
The elevator was still on its way up the 26/F when I realized that I didn't have my phone with me and since there were no buttons inside, I was trapped. I can feel my panic growing because part of me wanted to go back down and run after the driver, while another part of me wanted to meet my friend so I can borrow her phone and call my number. I did the latter. After exchanging breathless hellos, I told her that I stupidly left my phone in the cab and then we started calling. Just hearing the phone ring couldn’t make me breathe a sigh of relief. Until the driver picks up, I couldnt jump with joy.
Well the driver picked it up all right. Picked my phone right up, turned it off and stowed it away. At least that's how I imagined hearing 'The subscriber cannot be reached, please try your call later.' to be. I sent a very pathetic SMS to my number, choosing my words carefully so as not to offend the driver into doing something drastic, like maybe not returning my phone and claiming it for himself. Apparently, things like that aren't considered drastic anymore. In fact it’s the norm of life. What is so unpractical about taking something that's not yours that fell on your lap, or taxi for that matter? Pushing the panic and growing worry back down my throat, I sat through a 2 hour orientation and demonstration. I was proud of myself, I actually acted pretty normal.
5.30 PM
After the orientation, we tried calling my number again but to no avail. I finally swallowed my never-formed tears and firmed up my decision to move on. I went straight to the Globe Business Hub in Glorietta, applied for a line and got a free fone the day after. Wehehehe! Does the driver really think I'd waste my time stressing over the phone I just lost? Na-uh! (If only people or jobs were as easily replaced! =P)
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end
And the rest is history. The line I applied for wasn’t activated until two days ago so my phone effectively functioned only as a walkman/gameboy/gigi-cam/alarm clock/calculator for about a week. What a gizmo =O! Anyway, now its been activated, so life's back to normal again. Phew! Hindi na ako makakatakas sa ate at tita ko! =P |
