We were pasaway: We created our own pantry; had our own parties; ate, walked around shoeless, changed clothes under tables, danced, and did sit ups at will. We lived the free life. So imagine our dismay when we found out that we were being evicted. After a few months of protesting, serious talks with the company directors, postponement, ever-changing information (we were told that we will be transferred to this place, then to that place, and then finally back to this place), we finally said goodbye to our beloved Dorm two Fridays ago.
We were transferred to a new area on the same floor in our office. Is it ok? People kept asking us. Far from it!
By 'We' I mean us 'Dorm girls' otherwise known as the Staff Extensions/Virtual Teams. Staff Extensions are made up of 1-2 person teams to as much as 4 person teams who each belong to different departments and report to resource managers overseas. We used to occupy a semi-enclosed part of the office, aptly coined as the 'Dorm,' which sits besides the office pantry. The Dorm sits in one corner of the 14th floor, and is enclosed by a 5-foot divider, which provides a sort of small hallway coming from the pantry. Our comfort zone.
On the other hand, the pantry, which seats only about 15 pax at a time, is the place where approximately 200 people who have 8-5/9-6 schedules are supposed to have lunch at. Due to an unprecedented increase in staff hirings, the management decided to extend this pantry so as to free to meeting rooms which have been used tentatively as lunch areas. Naturally, we were the immediate casualty. There was no choice - because the area on the other side of the pantry is the Men's Restroom. And they can't take that away, now can they?
The move went smoothly, but we had one casualty - Robbie, our beloved dorm goldfish - perished during the process. Apparently, his fishbowl was left in our old room while the contractors were dismantling walls, tables and dividers, and the fumes may have affected the water he was living in. Different speculations were formed as to where his remains now lay - some say he was buried in the nearby American Cemetery, while others say that they saw a 2-inch fish spine in the sink. Well, Robbie and I had very little contact, except for the times that I'd tap on his fishbowl to wake him up, but I'll miss the li'l guy. Hmmm… I think I'll get my own Robbie ^_^
The new space we were relocated to is now an open space in front of our executive director's office, with table dividers only as high as your computer monitor. People pass by or stand up at a rate of 10 pax/minute. Phones do not ring off the hook, but I guess you can say one person's phone call is everybody else's conversation. Its distracting to say the least. Apart from that, this new area is so cold, and the pantry and Ladies Restroom is a million miles away (if you're an ant) but its still quite far from me. So now, I have decreased my water intake because when I drink, I pee. And that's two roundtrip walks already. We have adjusted to the new environment since we moved here, but there are just some things we'll never get used to like... the voice of a couple of our officemates! DaYm! talaga, everytime they talk on the phone… we immediately put our headphones on. Its not that they have bad voices or bad grammar, but the decibel with which they open their mouths surpasses even that of my sister's. Heaven help me, I don’t want to be mean, but... DaYm!!! |
